Suite Française
by Irène Némirovsky
View in Library Catalog
book cover

This book was written contemporaneously during the initial occupation of France by Germany in World War II. It offers a complex and probably a more realistic version of occupation. People get used to their new situation and at some level some come to accept it. The author was Jewish and she was arrested and murdered at Auschwitz in 1942.

Unique concept that kept my attention! Likable characters that you end up rooting for each in their own ways. In Nikki Erlick fashion, this one is fresh, unique, and brings home a strong message.

First half was slow for me, maybe because it rehashes what was in book 1 of the trilogy. Once the tributes entered the arena, things moved very swiftly. Don’t get attached to any characters. The ending? ??

This book was really really good and I know I’ll be rereading it before long. I don’t reread many books at all so that says something. I would recommend it for anyone and everyone

epilepsy, swimming team, coming of age, and trying to find your place in this world amongst health challenges, and the stigma of disability, this book was a recipe for success and I’m very happy to say I enjoyed it quite a bit! The discussion of where disabled athletes exist in the realm of competition is something that I have always had in the back of my mind. Well, I’ve been a competitive swimmer, and this book provided amazing firsthand experience with what it feels like and what it looks like to do as much as you can and still succeed along with your disability.
