Milk Fed

I decided to read this book after seeing it on bookstagram, and I'm so glad I decided to pick this up! This was an interesting read, it explores so many big and important topics and issues in such an interesting and engaging way. Through the idea of food 'Milk Fed' explores how the ideas put in our heads about body image at a young age effect how we live our lives as adults, it shows how something as simple seeming as eating and hugely HUNGER can play such a huge role in how we exist and experience things each day. It also explores the idea of what a "mother" is and what that figure looks like, and how she is perceived and is supposed to act and be to a child and an adult. Another big theme that comes out in this book is religion and its role in sexuality. It talks about how your upbringing can affect your view of your sexuality and force you to behave a certain way while also not changing who you are. Ultimately it shows the brutal reality of how religion and sexuality often clash and can lead to painful relationships with the people you care about and how messed up family dynamics can be. This book also explores the workplace and how as people we tend to "preform" a certain way with different groups of people, especially for people we see as higher up than ourselves, along with how this effects the way we see ourself. I read this book over the course of two days, it was a fast and addictive read that had me dying to know where the story was going to go. I loved the characters (and hated a few), especially that we could hear the inner thoughts and voice of the MC, it made the story so interesting. I loved this book and can't recommend it enough!

Another great fast-paced mystery novel in the Kinsey Millhone series by Sue Grafton. This one focused on a professional shoplifting ring run by the Mob. The novel is just a plain, fun summer read!

Down By the River

Emotional novel set in Ireland dealing with complex family relationships and the hypocrisy of social "norms" and "values." The novel is based on a controversial case in 1990s Ireland in which a 14-year-old girl becomes pregnant with her father's child. Events spiral out of control as opposing factions seek to control this girl's destiny. Per the publisher: "O'Brien has crafted a novel that contains the sweep of women's history that led to the case and continues beyond it. (The novel) is an unforgettable portrait of girlhood, loneliness, and our deepest humanity."

Most opera lovers would love this book. Opera lovers love to hear the dish on the personalities and this book will satisfy that need. I picked this book for two reasons: 1. I love opera and 2. My sister bought the author's house in Wallkill NY. Sometimes its personal.

As a former teacher, a mom, and now a grandmother I have read many children’s books. I chose this book because it’s on my grandsons summer reading list. It is filled with adventures. I had a hard time putting the book down. It has made me want to read the rest of the books about Brian. This book is a realistic fiction. It is based on many of the real adventures Gary Paulson experienced.

Not by favorite of her novels. It felt like it dragged on but I think that was the intent -o make you feel stuck much like the protagonist.
