Emotional novel set in Ireland dealing with complex family relationships and the hypocrisy of social "norms" and "values." The novel is based on a controversial case in 1990s Ireland in which a 14-year-old girl becomes pregnant with her father's child. Events spiral out of control as opposing factions seek to control this girl's destiny. Per the publisher: "O'Brien has crafted a novel that contains the sweep of women's history that led to the case and continues beyond it. (The novel) is an unforgettable portrait of girlhood, loneliness, and our deepest humanity."

Interesting concept. Could be a good conversation starter for a book club. The ending was not satisfying to read.

Persepolis

Marjane shares her experience of living in Iran as a child during the Islamic revolution in graphic novel form. Her story is both heartbreaking and hopeful, as we see her parents (and Marjane) find joy in small rebellions but also see friends and neighbors lose freedoms and their lives. It does a great job of showing how quickly these things can happen and feels particularly prescient in this moment in American history. It’s a quick but harrowing read; make it part of your 250th anniversary celebration as a reminder of what could happen, and as inspiration of what is worth fighting for.
